He teaches the word of God in a manner that is relevant and transformational, challenging the hearers “to live like we belong to Jesus.” He believes, teaches and preaches that the bible still “contains all things necessary to salvation,” and that this salvation as revealed in the bible is by faith in Christ and Christ alone. He is passionate and insistent in following the teachings of Jesus Christ to feed the hungry, clothed the naked, visit the sick and minister to those who are in prison.

Reverend Eddie Hilliard
Eddie Hilliard is a bi-vocational pastor after spending 30 years working for a Fortune 100 corporation. He held a number of ever increasing jobs managing as much as a $900,000,000.00 budget and leading teams of competent executives. This background has given him unique insights into the business side of church work. Beyond this it has offered unique perspectives on meeting people where they are in their life. He continues as a successful part of a local sales organization.
From 2008 through 2010 Eddie was Executive Director of The Texas Annual Conference’s disaster recovery efforts following Hurricane Ike. This was accomplished with a staff of eight dedicated workers and over 10,000 volunteers. These caring people were able to return 169 families to their homes; without this support these families may not have been able to return home. In addition, nearly a thousand additional people were touched by the efforts of the Disaster Recovery group. This was accomplished by seed funding from the United Methodist Church but the DR group raised 80 cents for every dollar from the UMC.
Eddie and his wife Wanda have been active missioners for years. They have led multiple teams to Guatemala and Cuba. They have both served at the conference level in numerous volunteer positions in an effort to promote social justice.
Eddie currently serves as the part time local pastor of Addicks United Methodist Church. This 100+ year old church is a growing outpost of the Kingdom of God. The Holy Spirit has been active here and the Family of Faith has caught fire as well.

Part Time Youth Director position open

Are you interested in exploring ministry and would like to have a part time youth job? In the sense, the Matagorda Methodist Church may lay claim to a history beginning in the late 1820’s and early 1830’s. We know that Henry Stevenson of the Mississippi Conference preached in Texas in those early years”—along the whole western boundary of settlements, all the way to the Colorado.” About the same time the Reverend H. S. Thrall, author of “A History of Methodists” preached as an itinerant preacher in Matagorda. In 1837 Dr. Ruter suggested that the Mississippi Conference form three circuits in Texas, naming Matagorda as one of the appointments. Dr. Ruter, himself, probably preached in Matagorda, for in his diary dated Jan. 9, 1838, he writes –“The migrants generally are aiming at the Colorado, and will soon form a dense population. I have been down near the mouth of it, but the country there is not so healthful as farther north.” The first Methodist organization in Matagorda, of which we have found any record, came about in January of 1839. We learn of this from the journal of the Reverend Jesse Hord. Following are some excerpts from his journal:
•Jan 1, 1839—“I started for Matagorda, pulling through black mud, a pouring rain and a howling norther. About noon I reached a house where I remained till morning of the 3rd, to rest my horse and to have my clothes adjusted for the Sabbath.”
•Jan 3, 1839—“Much refreshed I set out through the black prairie for Matagorda, and entered the city at 3 o’clock p.m. a stranger to all. Having a letter of introduction to Colonel Horton, I went to his residence. –Here, through the goodness of God, I was well domiciled with this very refined and intelligent family.”
•Jan6, 1 839—“At three P.M. I preached. We had much interest. I also preached at early candle light with much liberty. I opened the doors of the church, and four came forward. This was the beginning of the first Methodist class in Matagorda.”
In that same year, the Reverend Isaac L. G. Strickland made a missionary journey to this part of Texas. In a letter written later to the Reverend Littleton Fowler, he states, “-by Sunday I reached Matagorda. In the morning I had but few out as the appointment had been forgotten. Through Mr. Steel I had my appointment for the night published, which was numerously attended by all classes. The whole town turned out--.”
In December of 1839 the Mississippi conference organized the Rutersville District of Texas with seven churches, Matagorda being one of them. The Reverend R. Alexander was the Presiding Elder and the Reverend R. H. Hill was appointed as pastor to Matagorda.
It is not known when the first Methodist Church building was erected, but it is known that there was one in 1851 because on November 11, 1851, J. H. Selkirk, Treasurer of Matagorda county, Matagorda, Texas wrote a letter to J. DeCordova, land commissioner of the State of Texas, in which, among other pertinent information, he listed the various public buildings in Matagorda at that time, and the Matagorda Methodist Church building was among them. This building was destroyed by “The Great Storm of 1854.” Quoting from “A History of early Methodism in Texas,”—“it is supposed that the roof of the building was blown out to sea, as it was never found.” There seem to be no clear records for the next few decades. From an auricle appearing in “The Matagorda Gazette” in 1858, we know that attempts were being made to raise money to rebuild the church. However, if it was rebuilt, it was destroyed again, because in 1869 Methodist services were held in the Court House, with the Reverend Norman Savage conducting services. The present Methodist church building was erected in 1892 with Charles Baker being the builder. The church has grown with membership and community love. -This article reprinted from Matagorda Heritage Day booklet, October 10, 1998.

Matagorda United Methodist Church

What We Believe

GOD We believe in the one true, holy and living God. He is infinite in power, wisdom, justice, love, and rules with gracious regard for the salvation of men, to the glory of his name. We believe the one God reveals himself as the Trinity: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

JESUS CHRIST We believe in Jesus Christ, truly God and truly man. He is the eternal Word made flesh, the only begotten Son of the Father, born of the Virgin Mary by the power of the Holy Spirit. He lived, suffered, and died on the cross. He was buried, rose from the dead, and ascended into heaven to be with the Father, from whence he shall return.

HOLY SPIRIT We believe in the Holy Spirit who proceeds from and is one in being with the Father and the Son. He comforts, sustains and empowers the faithful and guides them into all truth.

HOLY BIBLE We believe the Holy Bible, Old and New Testaments, reveal the Word of God. It is to be received through the Holy Spirit as the true rule and guide for faith and practice.

CHURCH We believe the Christian Church is the community of all true believers under the Lordship of Christ. We believe it is one, holy, apostolic and catholic. Under the discipline of the Holy Spirit the Church exists for the maintenance of worship, the edification of believers and the redemption of the world.

SACRAMENTS We believe the Sacraments, ordained by Christ, are symbols and pledges of the Christian's profession and of God's love toward us. They are means of grace by which God works invisibly in us. Two Sacraments are ordained by Christ, namely Baptism and the Lord's Supper.

Where to Find Information on our Churches

Be sure to check out older posts to find news, information and photos of our district churches. When Lewis Pietzsch and 5 German families decided to move to East Bernard from Content, Texas (near Weimar), they brought their dismantled German Methodist Church as well as their minister with them by Galveston, Harrisburg and San Antonio Railway. The church has weathered the 1900 Hurricane, floods and storms; and it has been rebuilt, updated, enlarged and modernized twice. The current sanctuary was dedicated May 18, 1969. The church sits on a city block on Pietzsch Street and consists of the sanctuary, fellowship hall, bell tower complete with the original church bell brought in 1893, and parsonage.

Statement of Purpose
Guided by the Holy Spirit, this congregation believes that salvation is available to all people by God’s grace through the gift of His Son, Jesus Christ. For example:
 We coordinated the signing of a 100 ft prayer banner from the Bay City Community mailed to our troops.
 The Evangelism Team, on the Na-tional Day of Prayer, went out and prayed over federal, county, & city buildings and gave them meals.
 We mailed Hand painted pillow-cases to the USS Comfort to show support and encourage relief workers during disasters.
 We had special showing of Chris-tian films which were open to the community.
 We sponsored a concert with a Christian band & artist.

We welcome new ideas.

Our church has been extending God’s love to people both far and near, but our greatest show of God’s love is what we do in our lo-cal community..
Matthew 25:34-40
34 “Then the King will say to those on his right, „Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world.35 For I was hun-gry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in,
36 I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.‟ 37 “Then the righteous will answer him, „Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink?38 When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you?
39 When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?‟
40 “The King will reply, ‘I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.’

Join us as we step out into our community and be the beacons of God's hope and love.

First United Methodist Church of Bay City, Texas

2300 Avenue H / Bay City, Texsa 77414

979-245-4627

http://www.fumcbaycity.com/

Bear Creek United Methodist Church ~ Houston

Connecting Hearts to Christ

Bear Creek United Methodist Church was founded in 1977 to meet the needs of the fast-growing Bear Creek/Hwy 6 area. Since that modest beginning of 43 members, BCUMC has grown to a membership of over 900 families, with an average worship attendance of over 500. Bear Creek UMC invites you to come and join with others who are on a faith journey, seeking to live their lives according to the will and ways of God.

School
Bear Creek UMC School (BCUMCS) provides an enriched, creative environment that is sensitive, understanding and supportive of the everchanging roles of the family in the church and community. Activities are prepared by qualified teachers to help each child grow spiritually, emotionally, physically, intellectually and socially. We offer classes beginning at 12 months through Kindergarten. BCUMCS is open to all children regardless of race, nationality or creed, and is nonprofit, nonsectarian and nonpolitical. Contact Larry Tyree, larryt@bearcreekumc.org or call the church office for more information.

Other Ministry Areas
We have so many other ministry opportunities at Bear Creek UMC that there isn’t enough room to list them all, however, here are a few more:
MOPS (Mothers of PreSchoolers), Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts, BCU (Bear Creek University),Prayer Ministry, HIM (Health In Motion), Fellowship Friday, GED and ESL classes, and Piece Makers Quilting. Don’t forget to visit our HeBrews Coffee House and our Library, located in the Fellowship Hall. You can find sermons online in MP3 format and as podcasts. Our weekly newsletter can found online in PDF format for viewing or download.

There are two different worship styles available at Bear Creek; both are designed to help participants glorify God and experience the presence of Christ as real and relevant to their lives. Traditional services are held in the sanctuary at 8:15 and 11:00am. We offer a contemporary service at 9:40am in the Fellowship Hall.
Our 8:15 service is best described by: scripture, liturgy and holy communion. Each week holy communion will be the focus of the service. There will be a bulletin with order of worship and we will use the United Methodist Hymnal for our readings and prayers. Worshipers in this intimate service meet in the transept area of the sanctuary. This traditional worship service is perfect for those who are looking for an early start to their Sunday worship.
Our 9:40 service, featuring Faith Matters worship team, is an upbeat, active worship service featuring contemporary christian music and practical messages infused with moments of prayer, scripture and reflection.
In our 11:00 service we use a variety of musical styles: classical, gospel and traditional offered by choirs, soloists, instrumentalists and the congregation. The service is structured with traditional liturgy including time for prayer, scripture, sermon, children’s time, communion, music, reflection and occasional personal witnesses. There are opportunities for all ages to praise and worship God.

Membership and Baptism
If you have found a home here at BCUMC and would like to become a member, you may do so by transferring your membership from another United Methodist Church or another Christian denomination. Christian baptism is a prerequisite to joining The United Methodist Church.
Baptism is the sacrament by which we are initiated into Christ’s holy church. At baptism the church community celebrates God’s grace at work in a person’s life, no matter their age. It is a public profession of faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. We practice baptism by sprinkling water over the head of an infant, child, youth or adult as an outward and visible sign of an inward and spiritual grace.

Music and Fine Arts
Our Music and Fine Arts program encompasses a variety of oppportunities to worship through song including our Chancel Choir, Mens’ and Womens’ Ensembles, KidzROCK Choir, The Move (Youth Music and Fine Arts), and Faith Matters Praise Team (contemporary). Eddie Hilliard launched this outreach program in November 2010. Eddie and AUMC’s goal is to reach out and touch the untouchable in society just as Jesus did during his time on Earth.

Addicks sits on the edge of Houston’s Energy Corridor, where there are many homeless who American Society has deemed untouchable. Many homeless seek shelter from the elements on the church’s porches, while others stand under the Highway 6 overpass asking for help from passing motorists.

Word on the Street consists of bags that are put together by the members of Addicks containing beverages, snacks, information about where they can seek help for addiction, information on shelters in the area and information on Addicks and how to contact Eddie if they need additional help.

It is Addicks UMC's hope to reach out and touch these people with the word of God, and their love.

Addicks United Methodist Church

1212 Hwy. 6 North / Houston, Texas

281-531-0550

Holy Covenant UMC ~ Katy

<img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; It was the railroad stop for the Bear Creek community, which was established around 1850 by German immigrants who homesteaded along Bear, Langham and South Mayde creeks.

In 1884 the town was named after its first postmaster, Henry Addicks. In 1891, when the Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railroad was built, the town became a commercial center for local farmers and ranchers. Both the Bear Creek community and the town of Addicks were destroyed in the Galveston hurricane of 1900. The community rebuilt and listed a population of forty in 1925. The Bear Creek German Methodist Church, founded in 1879, continued as the Addicks United Methodist Church, although it quit conducting services in German during World War I.

Addicks Bear Creek Cemetery, located at the intersection of State Highway 6 and Patterson Road, contains the graves of the descendants of many of the original German settlers. Addicks had a population of 200 when the site was covered with water in the mid-1940s by the Addicks Dam Reservoir, built to protect nearby Houston from floods. By 1947 forty homes and buildings had been moved or destroyed, and the residents were required to resettle under the auspices of the Federal Flood Control Project. The relocated town, a suburb of Houston, had a population of 150 in 1988.

Today, Addicks United Methodist Church can boast of a rich heritage of history that continues in modern day times. It has the charm of a small, country church smack in the middle of a bustling community. It is a popular site for couples looking for an intimate wedding chapel setting, and it is home to a growing congregation of all ages. Their Mission Statement is: The mission of Addicks United Methodist Church is to increase our love of God and neighbor. We express this love through worship, service, learning and fellowship. The mission of Addicks United Methodist Church is to "increase our love of God and neighbor. We express this love through worship, service, learning and fellowship."

Sunday School is expanding. Sunday School begins at 9:30AM followed by Worship Services at 10:30. Coffee and donuts are served in the fellowship hall from 9:30AM to noon every Sunday. With two great adult Sunday school classes and a children’s class, Addicks has started the movement for greater opportunities in Bible studies. The traditional adult class meets in the fellowship hall and is involved in a study of Paul’s preaching to the Thessalonians and how it relates to our present time. The other class is a Bible study which meets in a classroom in the building behind the church.

The women's group meets on the first Tuesday of each month at 6:30PM. It is always a pot-luck dinner with one person furnishing the meat and the rest bringing side dishes and desserts. Reverend Hord wrote in his diary, “spent (day) in Richmond, preached at night to a good congregation, good feeling; much interest; The Holy Spirit rests upon many. Hallelujah! God is love.”

It is our hope that you have received the same impression. We strive to be a welcoming church instilling a good feeling in all who would worship with us. We are determined to be a church with much interest in what God would have us do and genuine interest in those around us, members and visitors alike. We wish to demonstrate evidence of the Holy Spirit resting on our lives, proclaiming in word and deed that God is love.

400 Jackson Street
Richmond ,TX 77469
(281)342– 6631
Email address: church.office@stjohnsumc-richmond.org

We at St. John’s recognize that not all persons looking to worship God have the same tastes or history of worship. Therefore, we offer three different services each Sunday morning.
At 8:45 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. We offer a traditional worship service. We sing hymns, recite Affirmations of Faith, join in the Doxology and Gloria Patri. These traditions have been a sustaining influence in many lives over the years. Music is generally provided by one of our five Vocal Choirs or one of St. John’s five Handbell Choirs.
The 11:00 a.m. Sacred Grounds service is a multi-media service where everyone is on common ground. Come and experience messages and music focusing on how to live in today’s times. Children and adults of all ages enjoy the energy-driven music delivered by our Praise Band in a casual atmosphere. The Sacred Grounds service is held in Wendt Hall on the corner of 5th and Morton Streets.

Check us out on our website at
http://www.stjohnsumc-richmond.org

Every Sunday
8:45 & Recognizing the challenges of our growing, diverse congregation, FUMCMC answers God’s call in a spirit of Christian love by extending its ministries of Christian worship, discipleship through education, spiritual growth and service to the world.

Every Sunday, our church family gathers in a variety of settings and styles of worship to offer prayers, praise and thanksgiving to God. Whether supported by pipe organ or electric guitar, mixed media or printed bulletins, drama or sermon, worship is the center of our lives as a community. All services are focused on the same scriptures and theme.

The 8:30 & 9:45 a.m. traditional services benefit from the intimacy of The Chapel of the Resurrection. Special music is provided by choirs, small ensembles, instrumentalists or vocal solos. The message is presented in multiple ways - song lyrics, videos, movie clips, litanies, storytelling, drama and sermons - with many points for congregational participation. It meets in the Fellowship Hall at 8:30 a.m.

ten:02 is a cutting-edge contemporary service in the Fellowship Hall at 10:02 a.m.! This sacrament enriches the worship experience of those for whom this was an honored tradition, as well as those who are discovering its rich meaning.

3900 Lexington Blvd. / Missouri City, Texas 77459

www.fumcmc.org

Jones Memorial ~ Houston, Texas

Jones Memorial UMC, The Higher Way Church, is celebrating 50 years of service in 2010. From its humble beginning on September 19, 1960, in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Nora, Jones Memorial has grown to be a vibrant and vital facet of the Southwest District and the United Methodist Church as a whole.

Jones Memorial has a rich heritage of ministry in both their local community and the Houston region at large. Reaching out to children, the elderly, the homeless and the unchurched, Jones continues their legacy of missional excellence that was a founding principal the church was built upon.

From the basic need of food to nurture the body, the members of Jones Memorial have placed themselves on the front line of duty. For years, Jones Memorial has reserved the fourth Saturday of every month to provide food for as many as 160 families. Jones has also collaborated with the Houston Food Bank to distribute food on the second and third Saturdays of the months of July, August and September. On the second and fourth Tuesday, volunteers meet and prepare 175 lunches to deliver to the homeless in downtown Houston.

Youth and education are another mission close to the heart of Jones Memorial. Partnering with Almeda Elementary school, one of the poorest schools in the Houston school district, Jones has equipped students with uniforms and supplies. In conjunction with Houston Community College, Jones has implemented a GED program. Opening their doors to young people seeking to complete their high school education, Jones began the program in September of 2009 and celebrated the graduation of the first class in May of 2010.

Summers are a busy place in the life of Jones UMC. From June 21 to July 27, Camp Higher Way opens the building for children of the neighborhood. This camp offers a variety of activities and crafts. Fun and learning are achieved through dance and music. A library is offered and computer skills are taught. The Houston ISD lends their support in this effort by providing lunch for the children. Then, in August of this year, a summer youth mission camp was hosted for the Sunnyside Community. This is a working service where youth get to stretch their wings and physically serve others doing repairs and painting, reaping the rewards of God’s kingdom as they perform much needed manual labor for those who cannot help themselves.

Congregational ministry is another integral part of the daily life of Jones Memorial UMC. Taking the words “every member in ministry” literally, Jones has cultivated an environment based on nurturing through their Congregational Care Ministry. Through this ministry, members who are unable to attend worship services are visited at least twice a month. Rev. Kenneth Levingston takes communion door to door, and members of the congregation visit those homebound to ensure that they are held within the close, personal bonds only a church family can provide. The Shepherd’s Group Ministry, a telephone based outreach, is yet another aspect of personal care. With visitation to the nursing homes and the Alzheimer’s support group which meets on the second Tuesday of the month, Jones Memorial United Methodist Church has established a heritage to enrich generations to come.

2504 Almeda Genoa Road / Houston, Texas 77047

www.joneshigherwayumc.com

Memorial Drive UMC in Houston, Texas

Memorial Drive United Methodist Church
12955 Memorial Drive
Houston, TX 77079
713 468 8356
www.mdumc.org

Memorial Drive United Methodist Church is a large congregation located in west Houston, near the intersection of Memorial Drive and the Sam Houston Tollway. Our main campus is located at 12955 Memorial Drive and our satellite campus, The Connection Center, is located at 13150 Memorial Drive. Dr. Charles B. Simmons, Senior Minister, states that although we are a large congregation that offers a full array of ministries, we try hard to “feel small” and remain faithful to a simple mission: loving God and loving neighbor. We want to be accepting and loving to all.

Three traditional services are offered each Sunday in the main sanctuary at 8:15, 9:30 and 11:00 am. A contemporary service, “the journey”, is held Sunday mornings at The Well at the Connection Center, at 11:01 am. We also offer a mid-week contemplative worship at 6:30 p.m., on the main campus, and a worship service designed for senior adults on Thursdays at noon at The Connection Center. Many adult Bible studies and growth opportunities take place throughout the week, as well as a full array of programming for children and youth.

Sugar Land ~ Christ United Methodist Church

Christ United Methodist Church is located on Austin Parkway in Sugar Land, about mid-way between Highway 6 and Lexington Road. Three of those services take place in the Sanctuary in the main building: contemporary at 8:15, relaxed traditional at 9:45, and a more formal traditional service at 11:05. The fourth celebration is our “hub” service, a redesigned style for seekers who want current music offerings. It’s held in the Family Life Center gym at 11:00. Christ Church is known as a friendly church with strong ministries to children and youth. We’re involved in hands-on service to the community and the world. We’re also a caring and compassionate church with vital prayer ministries and a monthly healing prayer service.
